Protecting Kenya's Mountain Rainforest

Kiplombe Community Conservancy

The Kiplombe Community Conservancy (KCC) is a scenically stunning, protected volcanic crater area in Baringo County. It boasts a vital patch of indigenous rainforest and high ecological diversity, stretching from the valley floor to Mt. Kiplombe’s peak.

The KCC is owned by the communities of Orinie, Nakurtawei, and Posto. The mountain was first set aside for protection in 1962 and was formally constituted as a Conservancy in 2017.

The collaborative project between the local community and the Treasures of Kenya began in late 2022. While initially focused on tourism, a comprehensive approach was quickly needed to ensure the long-term preservation of this critical rainforest.

Project Focus

Sustainable Development and Protection

The primary mission is conservation of the Kiplombe forest, creating sustainable benefits for both people and nature.

Immediate goals include empowering the community with professional skills, creating local jobs, and building sustainable conservancy management.

Our strategy has two core actions:

  • Process Facilitation: We act as consultants, acquiring partners and funds, and assisting with planning and organizational development.

  • Infrastructure Building: We are actively building the administrative and physical foundations at the headquarters for long-term forest protection.
Goals

Reversing Degradation, Building Capacity

The Kiplombe mountain rainforest is threatened by degradation and lacks expertise and funds. Our project addresses these needs through three key pillars:

  • Environmental Conservation: Protect biodiversity through reforestation; eliminate charcoal burning.

  • Community Empowerment: Create sustainable jobs and improve livelihoods through local conservation participation.

  • Ecotourism Development: Establish Kiplombe as a sought-after destination to generate income and sustain the conservancy.
