Where Resilience Meets Innovation
Sinyati Women Group
- 1992 - Sinyati Women Group is established
- 1998 - Founding a school in their home village
- 2005 - The women are displaced due to tribal clashes
- 2019 - Beekeeping is adopted as main source of income
- 2025 - Water is brought to the headquater via a pipeline
On the south-eastern shore of Lake Baringo, 22 determined Ilchamus women are redefining what empowerment looks like. The Sinyati Women Self-Help Group turns resilience into innovation — building up an independent agrobusiness, protecting nature, and challenging traditional gender roles.
What began in 1997 as a small idea for women’s empowerment has grown into a thriving beekeeping enterprise. Despite cattle raids, floods, and harsh drought, the women bought land and built a small honey and wax processing center. With dedication and vision, they created a sustainable source of income through honey and wax products — candles, cosmetics, and more — sold in local markets.
They’re shaping a new legacy — ensuring their daughters go to school and grow up free to choose their own future, not getting married as teenagers. They also started a reforestation project – to ensure enough flowers for the bees and to reduce erosion in this dry but flood-prone region.

Our Journey Together
With support from the Treasures of Kenya, key milestones have already been achieved:
- 2023: A motorbike facilitates honey transport and emergency aid.
- 2024: The first guest houses were built.
- 2025: The first phase of the Sinyati Water Project — a freshwater pipeline and 10,000-liter water tank now nourishes trees and bees year-round.
The Next Step
Building a Sustainable Future
Next, the Sinyati Women aim to:
- Build a water tower and filter system for safe, clean water.
- Expand reforestation and protect bee populations.
- Establish the Sinyati Innovation Center — a hub for training, culture, and sustainable development, where they also want to offer trainings for other women groups in beekeeping.
