History
Our story starts at the 50 Year Anniversary of Kenyas Independence

Our story began in 2009 with the ambitious idea of photographing Kenya’s 50 greatest treasures—one for each year—to mark the 50th anniversary of Kenya’s independence. This vision led to the launch of the 50 Treasures of Kenya Trust in 2011.
Our founding philosophy—you only protect what you know and love—still guides us. Our work has since evolved to focus holistically on nature conservation, sustainability, poverty alleviation, and empowerment.
Focus on the grassroots
After 2013, we initially supported counties in tourism marketing. In 2019, we decided to change strategy: we now work directly with local communities. Our aim is to tap into natural and cultural resources as sources of income and thus enable sustainable local development. Without the local people, no lasting protection is conceivable. We tackle economic, social and environmental challenges together to create resilience and positive change.

50 Treasures of Kenya Trust
The 50 Treasures of Kenya Trust is a Kenyan non-profit organization dedicated to conserving Kenya’s natural and cultural heritage. We promote sustainable development and believe, protection and change must work hand-in-hand.
We have worked with county governments, conservancies, and private companies. Today, we focus closely on local communities to strengthen their economic situation and help them become champions in resource conservation by diversifying projects into other income-generating activities.

Treasures of Kenya e.V.
Treasures of Kenya e.V. (TOKeV) is a German non-profit organization, working in close partnership with the Kenyan Trust. Our shared approach is based on the principle of helping people to help themselves.
We believe the greatest potential lies within the communities. We support them in protecting their rich cultural heritage and natural environment while ensuring they benefit economically.
Our work includes:
Promoting Sustainable Projects: We initiate and support projects in areas such as eco-tourism, traditional crafts, education, and organic farming.
Protecting Culture and Nature: We help communities preserve their unique traditions, knowledge, and natural habitats.
Cultural Exchange: We build bridges between cultures, allowing people from all over the world to experience Kenya’s diversity.

Cultural ambassador
Nina Ogot
Nina Ogot is the Treasure Ambassador for Kenyan music, an honour in recognition of her outstanding art that merges traditional music with modern forms of expression and international influences, thus painting a true image of contemporary Kenya, and keeping elements of traditional music alive and relevant. Nina Ogot is proud of using her popularity to expose the Treasures of Kenya to a wider audience in Kenya and abroad.
